Why
UX teams struggle with communication, data transfer, and presenting relevant research across diverse roles. Researchers specifically face challenges in improving communication, organising data, and influencing product outcomes.
What
Wrote a disseration of my in-depth research and designed a new design tool for AdobeXD that addresses key issues in UX research.
Leadership
I pitched this work to AdobeXD team to share ideas for an alternative comptetive startegy. A few weeks later they announced Figma buy that eventually led to permanently putting the software on manintence mode.
Research
The dissertation explores the evolving domain of User Experience (UX) research, targeting its integration with design processes. Through this study, a critical gap in contemporary design tools, such as Adobe XD, was identified: the lack of a cohesive system for incorporating research insights into the design workflow. By interviewing industry professionals and analysing established UX practices, the researcher sought to bridge this divide. The project aimed to design and validate a tool that would enhance collaboration, streamline research documentation, and directly impact decision-making in product development.
Objectives
At the heart of this study was the ambition to revolutionise how UX teams approach research and design integration. The objectives were:
To investigate existing methodologies through literature reviews and expert interviews.
To conceptualise and develop a collaborative design tool embedded within Adobe XD, progressing from sketches to high-fidelity prototypes.
To craft essential design artefacts, including user personas and thematic analyses, to inform and support the tool’s creation.
To test the tool in realistic critique sessions, ensuring its usability and alignment with professional workflows.
Process
The project followed a structured yet adaptive process, marked by distinct phases:
Discovery and Ideation
The initial phase combined exploratory research and informal dialogues with UX professionals. Through literature and discussions, challenges such as fragmented communication and the underutilisation of research data were identified. These insights shaped early sketches of a solution.
Validation through Engagement
The next step involved gathering qualitative feedback from industry experts. User interviews, conducted with a diverse group of professionals, provided a deeper understanding of their needs and workflows. Themes such as stakeholder engagement, research prioritisation, and collaboration emerged, forming the foundation for the design
Prototyping and Development
The insights led to the development of prototypes that evolved from low to high fidelity. Using Adobe XD, the tool was meticulously designed to reflect real-world usability, leveraging dummy data to simulate practical scenarios. Prioritisation techniques ensured that critical features addressed the most pressing needs.
Testing in Context
A simulated design critique session was conducted to evaluate the prototype. Participants were assigned roles reflective of a typical design team, creating a realistic environment for feedback. Observations were captured using a collaborative platform, providing actionable insights for refinement.
Documentation and Reflection
Throughout the project, meticulous records were maintained. The iterative process, combined with detailed thematic analyses, ensured that the design remained aligned with the research goals.
Achievements
A functional high-fidelity prototype integrated within Adobe XD, validated through real-world testing.
Comprehensive insights into UX research practices and their practical challenges.
Development of critical artefacts, including user personas and thematic analyses.
Impact
The tool bridges the gap between research and design, enhancing collaboration and accessibility of research data.
By integrating research as a core feature, it promises to streamline workflows and reduce inefficiencies.
Industry professionals recognised its potential as a transformative addition to UX practice.
Conclusion
This project not only addresses the immediate challenges faced by UX teams but also lays a foundation for future research and development, ensuring that tools evolve in step with professional demands.
